You may have noticed one of our newest Brigade programs, the Tom’s of Maine Natural Care Brigade, which collects toothpaste tubes, deodorant containers, plastic soap wrappers, mouthwash bottles and dental floss of any brand.

Since 1970, when they started the company in their kitchen, Tom and Kate Chappell have been dedicated to creating natural oral and personal care products that are good for you and the environment and to using packaging with minimal environmental impact as possible. For 42 years the company has found different ways to ensure that they contribute to environmental and economic stability, which is just one part of their Stewardship Model.

Tom’s of Maine is a sustainable company for many reasons beyond the work that they do with TerraCycle. In fact, Tom’s of Maine is always mentioned as one of the pioneering socially responsible companies in the world. Their noble efforts include their use of natural, organic or non-toxic ingredients, their environmentally sensitive manufacturing facility in Sanford, Maine, their packaging is made of post-consumer recycled paper board, and Tom’s is working with River Network and American Rivers to advocate for clean water.

Tom’s of Maine not only gives back to the environment, but they also give back to the community. The company donates 10% of profits to human and environmental organizations. Employees also receive 5% of their paid work time off to volunteer for a non-profit organization of their choice.

To celebrate our partnership and the launch of the Brigade, Tom’s of Maine and TerraCycle are hosting the Tom’s of Maine Less in Landfills Sweepstakes. One Brigade participant’s choice of a school or non-profit organization will be awarded with $1,000. For any collector that participates in the Brigade and sends in a shipment of waste into TerraCycle between now and November 30, 2012 it will count as one entry into the Sweepstakes. There is a maximum of 3 entries per Brigade location. The winner will be announced on or around December 15.
